First Tehama County Courthouse

The County of Tehama was formed from parts of Colusi, Butte, and Shasta Counties on April 9, 1856, through legislative approval. The seat of justice for Tehama County was in the town of Tehama. The exact location of the first courthouse could not be established. Information says that Judge Hall held his office in his home—a two-story house which stood on what was known as the Mooney Ranch close to where the Southern Pacific Depot now stands—and it is quite possible the courthouse was in the same office. In February 1857 the county seat was moved from Tehama to Red Bluff.
