Evans and Bailey Fight—1861

S. D. Evans, Sr., and Joe Bailey, stockmen from Rogue River Valley, Oregon, were, with 16 employees, driving 900 head of beef cattle from Roseburg to the mines at Virginia City, Nevada. They were attacked by Indians and the two owners were killed.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
