Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a cave containing archaeological deposits, dating to the palaeolithic period. The open site at Daylight Rock, part of Small Ord Point, occupies a raised beach c. 6m above OD. It is a small cave c. 1m in diameter, opening northwards. it was investigated in the 1950's when mesolithic flints were found in profusion. The site is turf covered, used if at all for occasional rough grazing.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement, ritual and funerary practices. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
