Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a cave containing archaeological deposits, dating to the palaeolithic period. Nanna's Cave is 3m wide, 3.5m high and 5m deep, situated near the top of coastal cliffs, with an eastern facing entrance. There is a level turf covered platform in front of the cave. Excavations revealed Palaeolithic and mesolithic flint implements, and pottery and implements from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Medieval periods were uncovered. The top of the cave is turf covered.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement, ritual and funerary practices. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
