Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument consists of the remains of a corn mill that probably dates to the eighteenth century. It consists of the mill, a second building thought to be the mill house, and part of a leat that ran from a mill pond to the southeast. The mill building is set on a terrace artificially levelled from the hillside, it is rectangular and stone built and measures c.8 x 5 m. It survives to a gable height of c.3.5m at one end, and to a height of c.2m on the other three sides. There is a door in in the one short end, an overflow channel in the other and two windows in the seaward facing wall. The leat fed an over-shot mill wheel still partly in situ in 1961. A pair of millstones with iron attachments is stacked in the interior, the floor is stone flagged.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of water management systems and industrial practices. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive but excludes the area of the mill pond.
