Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

An open-mountainside settlement with sloping, partially cleared enclosures and hut circles at joins in the walls, etc. Some of the huts are quite large, levelled and well preserved; other indistinct features may be smaller huts/buildings or just clearance piles. Huts 1 - 4 are fairly well preserved largish, stone-built huts with internal diameters around 4 m; hut 5 is smaller (around 2.5 - 3 m). Hut 6 is obscured by stone, but possibly larger again; 7 is indistinct. There are other features of various sizes similar to this. The huts are mostly linked by walls.

There are many other settlements of similar and later periods, up to post-medieval, all over the hills in this area, making it very interesting, with demonstrable continuity of settlement.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
