Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of two earthworks cutting off a small headland which is being eroded by the sea. The inner earthwork is a segment of a circle running from cliff to cliff with no entrance. It consists of bank, ditch, outer and small outer ditch. The maximum height of the inner bank above the ditch is c.2m. The outer earthwork runs from the cliff to the foot of a steep slope where it ends abruptly. It consists of a bank and outer ditch with a maximum drop of c.1.5m. The whole site is overlooked by a steep hill rising over 30m on the landward side and is not defensive. The date and purpose of the monument is unknown.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
