Location

Situated on W side of junction with Union Street.

History

End-terrace house built between the construction of the Picton Monument in 1825-8 and the 1834 map, altered or rebuilt in late C19, with late C19 iron front railings and gate. Later C19 large bay windows are of same design as on Nos 1-9 The Esplanade built 1879, and iron railings are like those on No 17 Picton Terrace.

Exterior

End-terrace house, independently built, well forward of No 23. Two parallel ranges with rear range lower, slate gabled roofs with brick stack to left of front range and boxed eaves. Front elevation of unpainted stucco, 2-storey and cellar, 3-window range, upper floor with 4-pane sashes and ground floor with canted 2-4-2 bay window with pilasters and modillion eaves cornice on large brackets, either side of central doorway. Flight of 5 slate steps up to doorway with stuccoed surround, plain cornice on consoles, and C20 glazed door with plain overlight. Cellar window beneath right bay window.
Rear range has first floor of painted brick with 3 horned 12-pane sashes and close-eaved roof, ground floor obscured by added garage.
Front garden enclosed by yellow brick dwarf wall with later C19 railings with alternately straight and twisted uprights alternating with panels of iron scrolls; gate with similar centre panel and cast-iron gate posts with spearhead finials.

Interior

Original staircase with stick balusters, panelled doors, dado rail. Shallow arched niches in sitting-room. Half-glazed door with coloured glass to cellar. C19 lozenge pattern floor tiles in rear hall.

Reason for designation

Included as a prominent end-terrace house, with good later C19 detail, part of the fine suburban development of this street.
