Location
Situated about 100m east of the Rock & Fountain public house, north side of B4242.
History
Early C19 milestone on old turnpike road from Neath to Pontneddfechan. 2 Ordnance Survey bench-marks added during the OS primary levelling exercise (1840-60) and / or secondary levelling (1912-21), giving height above sea-level.
Exterior
Milestone, stone, triangular section with rectangular base and curved top. Incised painted lettering, on the right side reading ‘IIII Miles to Neath' and on the left side 'VIII Miles to Pont vn.' for Pontneddfechan. Struck-through bench-mark on base and further, damaged, inscription reading ‘Neath [-]ower’. Bench-mark on apex indicates flattened incised square, presumably the correct height above sea level.
Reason for designation
Included as a well-preserved example of a milestone with special historic transport interest on old turnpike road.
