Cadw's description
Location
Crossing the Tennant Canal some 200m SE of the Church of Saint Cattwg and just N of the A465.
History
Canal bridge, probably contemporary with the Tennant Canal built 1821-24. The engineer was William Kirkhouse and the canal opened in 1824 from the Neath Canal at Aberdulais to Port Tennant, Swansea. Traffic declined from the 1860s due to competition with railways but the canal did not close to commercial traffic until 1934.
Exterior
Canal bridge, rubble stone, single segmental arch with tooled cut stone voussoirs. Abutments curve out slightly each side. Slightly humped with no parapets and very overgrown at time of survey (June 2003).
Reason for designation
Listed for its historical interest as a bridge on this important early C19 canal.
