Cadw's description

Approximately 1km E of Llanllawddog church, in a field on the N side of a minor road between Llanllawddog and Brechfa.

A late C18 or early C19 house shown on the 1838 Tithe map as Dderwen Fawr. The house was improved in the later C19 when windows were inserted in the gable end, including an attic bedroom window, distinguished by their use of brick dressings. The house was no longer inhabited by the late C20.

A 1½-storey cottage of rubble stone (partly rendered) and thatch roof beneath corrugated iron sheets, with brick end stacks. The L end has brick quoins. Openings are offset to the R. A central boarded door has a margin-lit late C19 sash window to the L and to the R a small-pane sash window (the lower sash of which is missing), all under wooden lintels. In the L gable are 4-pane sash windows inserted lower L and in the attic in the late C19, with brick dressings. In the R gable end is a 6 over 3-pane sash window inserted into a former attic doorway. A blocked opening is lower R.

The interior has a central passage with stair at the rear, and 2 rooms, the L-hand larger with a C19 surround to the fireplace.

Listed as a rare survival of a small upland farmhouse once characteristic of Carmarthenshire, retaining strong regional character and detail.
