Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a large prehistoric round barrow, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC). The grass-covered earth and stone barrow is situated in unimproved pasture on the summit of a large plateau and is circular on plan, measuring about 18m in diameter and up to 0.6m in height. There are traces of an external bank enclosing a shallow ditch and there is a large shallow depression within the N side of the barrow itself, presumably the result of either stone robbing or an antiquarian investigation.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial rites, social organisation and the environment. The monument retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of both structural evidence and the presence of intact burial or ritual deposits within and preserved prehistoric ground surfaces below the barrow.

The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular on plan and measures 30m in diameter.
