Location

Situated on north side of Fairy Road, adjacent to its junction with Belmont Road.

History

One of a pair of houses; dated 1881; built by E A Ould for W E Samuel, probably as a speculation. The 'Fairy Mount' of the original name of No 5 refers to a burial mound now in its garden.

Exterior

Red brick with terracotta and stone dressings, roughcast rendered panels to first floor, and green slate roof. 2 storeys and attic, balanced asymmetry. Principal front faces south, with central entrance between 2 crow-stepped gables. Recessed porch, with terracotta ribs each side of segmentally arched entrance continuing to form panels with 'Fairy Mount 1881' in raised lettering. Panelled door with overlight. 2-light uPVC replacement casement window above the entrance beneath overhanging eaves. Semi-octagonal turret with bell-cast roof to right of entrance bay, with windows renewed in uPVC. Paired windows (uPVC replacing original sashes with small upper panes) on each floor in left hand gable, which is articulated by Corinthian pilasters of rubbed brick and terracotta, and stone bands forming lintels. Lower windows have brick relieving arches above a moulded string. Central rib forming finial to crow-stepped gable. Stack on left hand gable wall, embellished with terracotta work. A similarly detailed stack clasped in the inner angle of the turret to the right of the entrance. Set-back right hand gable has single window on each floor, again uPVC replacements of original sashes with small upper panes, and detail as in left hand gable. Rear service wing with asymmetrical roofline and casement windows (again renewed) with segmentally arched heads. Stair-window in rear of main range, with leaded lights and some stained glass work.

Interior

The original internal layout survives largely intact, with central entrance and stair hall, and principal rooms arranged to either side. Service rooms to rear (where there have been minor modifications to layout). Some original decorative details also survive, with contemporary joinery detail including the staircase, which has Japanese-style lattice balusters.

Reason for designation

Listed, with No 7, as a very good example of the Arts and Crafts style, expressively planned and detailed using local materials. Group value with Nos 9 and 11 Fairy Road.
