Introduction

Former mayor's VILLA from 1868 with GARDEN with picturesque layout, presumably from around 1926. House and garden are remarkably situated on the terrain of the demolished borg Meyma, which is surrounded by watercourses. The residential house is executed in an Eclectic formal language with references to Neo-Gothic; the barn-shaped rear house, which in those days served among other things as a coach house, is constructed in an Artisanal-traditional building style. The villa was built at the request of mayor Meekhoff Doornbosch. The designer is not known. On the basis of formal similarity and based on topographic information, it is likely that the landscape garden was laid out in or around 1926, together with the garden at the neighbouring property Meymaweg 4 newly built in that year (Farm Meyma, architect W. Reitsema from Leens). Both gardens could have been designed and laid out by the firm Vroom from Glimmen.

Description

EXTERIOR. Front house constructed of rendered brick (block rendering) and consisting of single-storey side wings with between them a two-storey octagonal tower-like central section; profiled pilasters and cornice; stucco decorations; elegant cast-iron balustrades around the 'tower' and in front of the (low) roof structures and the balcony; sash windows and casement doors under (depressed) ogee arch; six-pane glazing; cast-iron approach to doors of tower room; in front and rear doors profiled panels and fanlight with cast-iron ox. The barn-shaped rear house constructed of red brick and covered by a hipped roof laid with blue-glazed flat Frisian tiles. In the side facades six-pane sash windows at the height of the service rooms; for the rest cast-iron windows. In the rear facade double barn doors with half door, stall door and cast-iron windows; wall anchors.

INTERIOR. The floor plan of front and rear house has remained unchanged and consists of three living rooms situated at the front with several smaller rooms behind them, which are separated by a corridor running the full width of the service rooms at the rear. The service rooms are as it were extended into the barn-shaped rear house. In the interior are notably: in the front house the central hall with impressive double staircase with landing and carved wooden banisters; the stucco ceilings and stucco decorations, the panelled doors, the black marble fireplace mantels; the cellar with red tiles. In the barn-shaped rear house the roof truss structure. GARDEN. The garden surrounded by watercourses has a picturesque layout with as most characteristic elements small hills, a sloping lawn with an elegantly shaped elongated pond and a garland of 16 (original) peony beds. Near the house stand several old linden trees. For the rest there are in the garden among others flowering and non-flowering trees of various ages.
