Kapel van Onze Lieve Vrouw in 't Zand. Gesticht omstreeks 1500, herbouwd in 1597, in 1608 met een zuidelijke dwarsarm vergroot, in 1648 tot raadhuis ingericht, in 1853 in haar oorspronkelijke functie hersteld. Eenschepig gebouw van drie traveeën met smaller en lager driezijdig gesloten koor; zuidarm met in- en uitgezwenkte topgevel, waarin het jaartal 1608. Diepe aanbouw uit 1893 aan de noordzijde. Rondboogvensters, steunberen, leiendak en dakruiter. Inwendig onder een groot verguld neogotisch baldakijn het XVIe eeuwse pijpaarden mirakelbeeldje van de Lieve Vrouw (polychromie XIXe eeuws) en achterin de kapel een drieluik op paneel uit 1518, in de trant van Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen, voorstellende Maria met Kind en Johannes in een landschap, op de zijluiken de portretten der schenkers met hun beschermheiligen. Description
Chapel of Our Lady in 't Zand. Founded circa 1500, rebuilt in 1597, enlarged in 1608 with a southern transverse arm, converted to a town hall in 1648, restored to its original function in 1853. Single-aisled building of three bays with narrower and lower three-sided closed choir; south arm with splayed gable, in which the date 1608. Deep extension from 1893 on the north side. Round-arched windows, buttresses, slate roof and roof turret. Internally beneath a large gilded Neo-Gothic baldachin the 16th-century earthenware miracle figure of Our Lady (polychrome 19th century) and at the back of the chapel a triptych on panel from 1518, in the manner of Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen, depicting Mary with Child and John in a landscape, on the side panels the portraits of the donors with their patron saints. The chapel has formed part of the Mariengaarde convent built there since 1856.
