Omschrijving
Betonnen brug (Werkhoven, Kerkpad).
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Concrete bridge (Werkhoven, Kerkpad).
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
CONCRETE BRIDGE (Werkhoven, Kerkpad) located in the path leading from Provincial Road N 229 to the lock and weir at Werkhoven. The Kerkpad and the bridge cross a smaller, 'cut-off' secondary branch / meander of the Kromme Rijn. The heavy concrete design and the approximate dating suggest a former military significance of the bridge. The bridge, of a rare type, shows - so far as is known - only some similarity with a specimen dating from 1938 in the complex Concrete Works Groeneweg, east of Fort Honswijk. No evidence has been found that the bridge was constructed at the expense of the Ministry of War. Wooden bridges were relatively quick to destroy, if necessary by setting them on fire. Stone and concrete bridges required a larger and more time-consuming intervention, although an explosive charge could sometimes quickly achieve the desired effect. Blowing up bridges was capital destruction and happened only in utmost necessity. The bridge deck and the abutments of the bridge on the Kerkpad at Werkhoven are executed in reinforced concrete, with the particular feature that the abutments on the downstream side are wider than the bridge deck and are built conspicuously heavily. The bridge may form part of a former retreat route for the Dutch field army, but the heavy construction may also reveal a function for heavy transport to and from the nearby lock and weir. It is conceivable that the work also possessed a military-hydraulic function in relation to these structures and that it could, or should have served as a (necessary additional) water barrier in the parallel, cut-off Kromme Rijn branch. It is unclear whether a barrier was ever installed. In relatively recent times, the approximately 50 cm high parapet on the upstream side has been newly built.
Description
CONCRETE BRIDGE (Werkhoven, Kerkpad) on the path from Provincial Road N 229 to the lock and weir in the Kromme Rijn, to the northeast of the village. The work comprises two relatively heavy reinforced concrete abutments, a concrete roadway and on either side approximately 50 cm high and approximately 10 cm thick concrete parapets. The southern (upstream) one of these has been renewed. The span is approximately 2 m and the roadway is approximately 4 m wide. Both heavily constructed abutments are wider than the bridge deck - on the downstream side approximately one metre - and on that side they are also slightly outward-sloping at the top.
Valuation
The CONCRETE BRIDGE (Werkhoven, Kerkpad) is of general interest because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which was based on and arose as a result of: a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century),
This concerns a component from around 1940, namely an expression of historical road and water construction related to military-strategic building, specifically a fixed bridge which was constructed for both civil and military purposes.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is fairly well preserved because it - although repaired - has remained in use and is largely unchanged.
* The component represents rarity value because few or no other works of this type are known.
