Houten schotbalkenloods.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

In oostelijk dakvlak twee steekraampjes.

Wooden sheet-pile shed.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

WOODEN SHEET-PILE SHED, serving as storage for sheet-piles which in principle could serve as a temporary barrier in the Intake Sluice / River Water Defence. The shed lies approximately 15 metres to the west of the sluice keeper's dwelling and borders on the other side a Nissen hut. The shed lies with the greatest length perpendicular to the road and with the roof ridge running north-south. The shed is possibly not the first on this site; this example is - perhaps built around 1930. At many locations within the New Hollandic Waterline, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been created over the decades to serve as (temporary or permanent) storage space, storage, and as accommodation for people or materials, hospital, fire station, horse stable, watch house, etc. The sheet-pile shed can be counted among this category of storage places. A large part of these sheds has meanwhile perished, been demolished, relocated or sometimes replaced, but others still exist in authentic form in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. The shed at the Intake Sluice / River Water Defence at Tiel has been partially altered: the right long side and the left part of the left side are later clad horizontally with rebated boards. These parts obscure the verticals from view. Furthermore, the northern gable end has recently been provided with new, wooden, double doors. The interior was not visited.

Description

WOODEN SHEET-PILE SHED on rectangular floor plan (11 x 4.25 m), covered by a gabled roof laid with red, hollow pantiles with short eaves and wind braces on brackets. In northern gable end a small door. In east roof slope two small ventilation windows. The shed, mainly black, is in the north facade and in the right half of the left side (and possibly also in the south facade) provided with horizontally placed (lapped) wooden boarding with intervening ventilation gaps. Verticals are partly present in these facades, showing that the structure has eight bays. The shed has - apart from the access in the north facade - two windows with cross glazing bars and an access in the left facade, an access and likewise a window in the south facade and likewise a window in the right facade.

Valuation

The WOODEN SHEET-PILE SHED to the west next to the sluice keeper's dwelling at Tiel is of general interest by reason of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as it was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and realised in first instance from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden building related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (20th century).

This concerns a component which presumably dates from the Interwar period (c. 1930), namely a wooden storage building for sheet-piles.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also by reason of the functional and physical connection with the other components of the complex and in particular with the intake sluice / river water defence located in the vicinity.

* The component is reasonably representative because it is an example of a sheet-pile shed built in the first half of the 20th century at a water defence dating from around 1880.

* The component is still preserved to a limited extent because characteristic features have only been partially preserved and the main form in particular has remained recognisable.
