Cluster 47. Flankkazematten / Bomvrije gebouwen.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 47. Flank Casemates / Bomb-Proof Buildings.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

TWO FLANK CASEMATES / BOMB-PROOF BUILDINGS, respectively on the northwestern side and the southwestern side of Lunette IV, as mortared and partly earth-covered structures for accommodation, storage and close defence. Bomb-proof buildings are constructions executed in heavy, usually vaulted brickwork - often also provided with earth covering - which were considered capable of withstanding enemy fire. Various functions can be housed within them, including casemates. These bomb-proof buildings form part of the outer brick wall of the work on the outside, but are built higher. Casemates are closed, bomb-proof spaces, usually constructed in stone or concrete, fitted out for the operational positioning of artillery and/or other firearms. Casemates are therefore provided with one or more, optionally closable and/or covered gun embrasures. Casemates can be independent defensive works, but they can also form part of a larger work, such as a fort. Flank casemates are usually part of the flanks of defensive works and serve in particular to provide flanking fire along a line. The bomb-proof buildings of Lunette IV at Utrecht have their greatest length parallel to a part of the gorge and possess the gun embrasures there.

Description

TWO FLANK CASEMATES / BOMB-PROOF BUILDINGS (c. 1825), respectively on the northwestern side and the southwestern side of Lunette IV and situated diagonally opposite in the floor plan. The bomb-proof buildings were intended for 'accommodation and storage of projectiles' and were provided with gun embrasures to facilitate defence. The buildings are mirror images of each other and thus form each other's counterparts. The casemates can easily be recognized from the outside of the work by a series of vertical gun slits. Their greatest length lies parallel to the gorge side of the work, where the gun embrasures, somewhat more squat than those of the three other lunettes, are also located. The sharp angles of the masonry slope back slightly and are reinforced and accentuated by blocks of natural stone. The entrances to the bomb-proof buildings are located on the short sides of the buildings facing the centre of the work and consist of arched brickwork. Within this are double wooden doors with arched facade openings on either side. Various interior components or their remains and traces are still present.

Valuation

The TWO FLANK CASEMATES / BOMB-PROOF BUILDINGS on Lunette IV are of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building craft, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

These are here components from approximately 1825 as examples of (partly) earth-covered, bomb-proof corner elements built on the brick facing of lunette IV for accommodation, storage and defence.

* Ensemble value and situational values as components of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical cohesion with the other components of the complex and as counterparts of each other.

* The components are representative (characteristic) because they display in appearance the characteristics that underscore the then defensive purpose.

* The components are well preserved because they are in virtually the condition in which they were around 1825, while they still possess various authentic components and details.
