Omschrijving
Cluster 46. Flankkazemat / Bomvrij gebouw
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 46. Flank Casemate / Bombproof Building
NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE
Introduction
FLANK CASEMATE / BOMBPROOF BUILDING on the northwest side of Lunette III, as a masonry structure and partially earth-covered shelter for accommodation, storage and close defence. Bombproof buildings are structures executed in heavy, usually vaulted masonry - often also provided with earth covering - which were considered capable of withstanding enemy fire. Various functions can be accommodated within them, including casemates. This bombproof building forms part of the brick enclosure wall of the work on the outside, but is built up higher. Casemates are closed, bombproof spaces, usually executed in stone or concrete, which are fitted out for the operational placement of artillery and/or other firearms. Casemates are therefore provided with one or more, whether or not lockable and/or covered gun embratures. Casemates can be independent defensive works, but they can also form part of a larger work, such as a fort. Flank casemates are usually part of the flanks of defensive works and they serve particularly for providing flanking fire along a line. The flank casemates of the lunettes at Utrecht have their greatest length parallel with part of the gorge and are there - on the gorge side of the work and thus not in the flank - provided with gun embratures.
Description
FLANK CASEMATE / BOMBPROOF BUILDING on the northwest side of Lunette III and positioned diagonally in plan. The bombproof building (1826) was intended for 'accommodation and storage of projectiles' and was provided with gun embratures to facilitate defence. The structure is somewhat mirrored in relation to the cannon and flank casemate / bombproof building located on the southwest bastion and they form more or less each other's pendants. The casemate is easily recognized from the outside of the work by a series of vertical gun slits. The greatest length of the bombproof building lies parallel with the gorge side of the work, where the gun slits are also located. The sharp angles of the masonry slope slightly back and are provided with natural stone blocks. The entrance is located on the short side facing the centre of the work and consists of arched masonry, in which is a double wooden door. The interior consists of a number of connected spaces executed in heavy masonry; part of the spaces opens onto and is provided with slot-shaped gun embratures. Various interior components or their remains and traces are still present.
Valuation
The FLANK CASEMATE / BOMBPROOF BUILDING on the north bastion of Lunette III is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as this was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and accessory defence (19th century), b. the competition with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).
This concerns a component from around 1825 as an example of an earth-covered, bombproof, corner element built on the brick enclosure of Lunette III for accommodation, storage and defence.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical connection with the other components of the complex and as pendant of the casemate on the southwest bastion.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it displays in appearance the characteristics that emphasize the defensive purpose of that time.
* The component is well preserved because it is in virtually the condition in which it was around the 1820s.
