Omschrijving
Cluster 44. Twee flankkazematten / Bomvrije gebouwen.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 44. Two flank casemates / Bomb-proof buildings.
NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE
Introduction
TWO FLANK CASEMATES / BOMB-PROOF BUILDINGS, respectively on the north-west side and the south-west side of Lunet I, as mortared and partially earth-covered shelters for accommodation, storage and close defence. The casemates form part of the brick perimeter wall of the work on the outside, but are built up higher. Casemates are closed, bomb-proof spaces, usually constructed in stone or concrete, which are fitted out for the operational positioning of artillery and/or other firearms. Casemates are therefore provided with one or more shooting slits which may or may not be closable and/or covered. Casemates can be independent defensive works, but they can also form part of a larger work, such as a fort. Flank casemates are usually part of the flanks of defensive works and they serve in particular for providing flanking fire along a line. The flank casemates of Lunet I at Utrecht have their greatest length parallel with part of the gorge and have the shooting slits there. Both flank casemates / bomb-proof buildings have acquired new functions, partly educational, partly (the northern example) in continuation of the former BB role, which presumably began around 1955. The casemate with former BB function has been partially stripped of its earth covering due to the anchoring of an antenna mast. The casemates have been somewhat modified for their new functions.
Description
TWO FLANK CASEMATES / BOMB-PROOF BUILDINGS (1828), respectively on the north-west side and the south-west side of Lunet I and situated diagonally opposite in plan. The bomb-proof buildings are positioned mirror-image to each other and thus form each other's counterparts. The casemates can be easily recognized from the outside of the work by a series of vertical shooting slits. The greatest length lies parallel with the gorge side of the work, where most of the shooting slits are also located. The sharp angles of the masonry slope slightly backwards. The entrances are located on the short sides facing towards the centre of the work and are provided with arched entrances. In the northern building there are two separate entrances, of which the right one is modified and fitted with a heavy steel door. The southern one is provided with a double wooden door with a gable opening with iron bars on each side. Various interior components or remains and traces of them are still present.
Valuation
The TWO FLANK CASEMATES / BOMB-PROOF BUILDINGS on Lunet I are of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).
These are components from around 1825 as examples of (partially) earth-covered, bomb-proof corner elements built on the brick cladding of Lunet I for accommodation, storage and defence.
* Ensemble value and situational values as components of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and as counterparts to each other.
* The components are representative (characteristic) because they display in appearance the characteristics which emphasize the defensive purpose of the time.
* The components are well preserved because they are in their essential condition as they were around 1825 / 1955, while they retain various authentic components and details.
