NEW DUTCH WATERLINE

Introduction

TARGET STORAGE SHED N is a building created as storage for materials needed at the shooting ranges. In various locations within and outside fort grounds, over the decades wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been created to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, accommodation for people or materials, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has meanwhile decayed, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. At Fort De Bilt, several shooting ranges have been laid out since the end of the 19th century, for which storage space for the associated materials, such as shooting targets, has been set up. Description

TARGET STORAGE SHED N at Fort De Bilt is a rectangular, brick building (approx. 12 x 7 m) under a gabled roof covered with thatching tiles on the northern half of the fort. The storage shed probably dates from the end of the 19th century, when the first shooting ranges were also laid out. * Cultural-historical values as part of the New Dutch Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century), b. the arms race with increasingly powerful offensive means (20th century).

This concerns here a non-bomb-proof storage for materials belonging to shooting ranges which were set up around 1900 on the fort.
