Introduction

STORAGE SHED M is a building added around 1930 to the then existing fortification work to serve for storage of equipment. In various places within and outside fort sites, over the course of decades, wooden, stone and metal ('corrugated iron') sheds have been constructed to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, accommodation for people or equipment, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guard house, etc. A large part of these sheds has meanwhile disappeared, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. Storage Shed M, located on the southern half of Fort De Bilt, is built in brick but functionally aligns with the mostly wooden sheds built on forts in the 19th century. Description

STORAGE SHED M of Fort De Bilt is an elongated, rectangular brick building (approximately 40 x 11 m) with a muted tile covered gabled roof on the southern half of the fort. The length of the building comprising one storey and attic storey runs parallel to Barracks B2 and the Auxiliary Barracks L located to the west of it. The storage shed dates presumably from around 1930 and shows the characteristics of that period in its main features. In the 14 bays, recognisable by pilasters, of the long facades, regularly distributed window and door openings are located. In the north end wall on the ground floor four windows and three in the gable; the south facade three windows and as the second opening from the right an entrance.

Valuation

The STORAGE SHED M within Fort De Bilt is of general importance on account of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (20th century).

This concerns a non-bomb-proof storage facility for equipment from the Interwar period, presumably from around 1930.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline in general and on account of the mutual functional, functionally-spatial and physical coherence with the other components within the Fort De Bilt complex.
