Cluster 38. Hulpkazerne L.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 38. Auxiliary Barracks L.
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
The AUXILIARY BARRACKS L is a building added to the accommodation facilities of Fort De Bilt to house soldiers and their equipment. The building was added to the existing buildings as compensation for the loss of the middle section of the original, centrally located barracks B. This was partially demolished around 1930 and now consists of two separate sections to make room for the Biltsestraatweg. The auxiliary barracks is located on the southern half of Fort De Bilt. The window and door openings have been fitted with new frames and double glazing; on the south side there is a later extension.
A barracks is a residential building for soldiers and their equipment. It was the French who introduced the system of housing soldiers in barracks in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; from that time onwards barracks became part of forts, but in addition many were also constructed as separate buildings within or outside built-up areas (cities). The barracks buildings situated within 19th-century forts and other works were usually constructed as bomb-proof shelters, meaning they were designed to withstand enemy fire. As building material, initially masonry several metres thick was used and later (reinforced) concrete, while the roof covering and front face(s) were additionally covered with earth. In the case of the auxiliary barracks at Fort De Bilt, a non-bomb-proof addition was made in the Interwar period to serve as replacement accommodation following the demolition of part of the 19th-century bomb-proof barracks. Barracks not located within forts or other works were buildings either specially constructed and fitted for that purpose or not, providing accommodation for the (permanent) housing of soldiers, often also equipped with other military facilities such as parade grounds.
Description
The AUXILIARY BARRACKS L of Fort De Bilt is an elongated, rectangular brick building (approximately 40 x 8 m) with a muted tile covered gabled roof on the southern half of the fort. The length of the building comprising one storey and attic runs parallel to and roughly between Barracks B2 and Storage Shed M. Five roof dormers in both roof slopes; short roof overhangs resting on corbels. On the east side a small extension serving as a guard house. The auxiliary barracks dates from 1930 and still shows the characteristics of that period in its main features. In the long facades irregularly distributed window and door openings. In the north end wall on the ground floor two windows and in the gable a third; the south facade contains only one window above the later extension.
Valuation
The AUXILIARY BARRACKS L within Fort De Bilt is of general importance on account of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (20th century).
This concerns a non-bomb-proof enlisted personnel shelter from the Interwar period, dating from 1930.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline in general and on account of the mutual functional, functionally-spatial and physical coherence with the other components within the Fort De Bilt complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is recognisably added to the existing fort.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because it has been preserved well in its main form, but has undergone changes in detail.
