Cluster 33. Bomvrij gebouw M / Verbruiksmagazijn.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 33. Bomb-proof Building M / Ammunition Magazine.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

BOMB-PROOF BUILDING M / AMMUNITION MAGAZINE, as the southernmost of two earth-covered structures situated in the eastern curtain wall. An ammunition magazine is a storage facility for munitions. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisance) grenades, it became increasingly difficult to withstand bombardment. Reinforcement of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (including through the use of arches), shallow slope angles and curved or conversely pointed forms, use of concrete – and later reinforced concrete – in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to keep the fortifications resistant to increasing attack force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings had proved to be an effective means of absorbing or dampening energy. This is why many masonry or concrete structures were provided with a layer of earth or a front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction – and thus the expected impact force of projectiles – the term 'bomb-proof buildings' was used when they were considered capable of withstanding a predetermined number of impacts from heavy calibre. The structure is situated close to building I in the wall, to the north-east of the church.

Description

BOMB-PROOF BUILDING M / AMMUNITION MAGAZINE constructed in brick, dating from the period 1873-1875; largely incorporated into the wall and thereby covered with earth on three sides and on top. Only a façade on the west side and almost perpendicular to the front descending wing walls.

Valuation

The BOMB-PROOF BUILDING M / AMMUNITION MAGAZINE of Fort Blauwkapel is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component dating from approximately 1874 and which is regarded as an example of a bomb-proof ammunition storage facility.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is a good example of a small bomb-proof structure on a fort from the last quarter of the 19th century.

* The component is well preserved because characteristic features have been retained and remain recognisable.
