Cluster 33. Bomvrij gebouw I / Schuilplaats.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 33. Bombproof Building I / Shelter.

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

BOMBPROOF BUILDING I / SHELTER as the northernmost of two earth-covered structures situated in the eastern curtain wall. A shelter is an accommodation for military personnel during bombardment. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (high-explosive) grenades, it became increasingly difficult to withstand bombardment. Strengthening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other things through the use of arches), shallow slopes and curved or pointed forms, use of concrete - and later reinforced concrete - in ever heavier construction, was one of the ways to keep the fortifications able to withstand increasing offensive force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings had proved to be an effective means of absorbing or dampening energy. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete structures were provided with a layer of earth or a front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thereby the expected impact force of projectiles - structures were referred to as 'bombproof buildings' when they were considered capable of withstanding a predetermined number of impacts from heavy calibre weapons. The structure is situated close to building M in the wall, to the northeast of the church.

Description

BOMBPROOF BUILDING I / SHELTER constructed in brick, dating from the period 1873-1875; largely incorporated into the wall and thus covered with earth on three sides and on top. Only a facade on the west side and wing walls descending almost at right angles to the front.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF BUILDING I / SHELTER of Fort Blauwkapel is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component that dates from around 1874 and is regarded as an example of a bombproof shelter for personnel.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is a good example of a small bombproof structure on a fort from the last quarter of the 19th century.

* The component is well preserved because characteristic components have been retained and remain recognizable.
