Omschrijving
Cluster 33. Loods / Barak (a1).
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 33. Shed / Barracks (a1).
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
SHED / BARRACKS (a1) perpendicular to the Kapelweg and to the southwest of the church, as a non-bombproof (and temporary) accommodation for military personnel. In various locations within and outside fort grounds, over the course of decades wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been built to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, accommodation for military personnel or materiel, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has since decayed, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. Of the sheds built on Fort Blauwkapel in the 19th century, two still exist, namely Wooden shed (a3) and Shed / Barracks (a1) - known as 'shed for auxiliary barracks accommodation'. The rear facade of Shed / Barracks (a1) was completely renewed in 1976 in the form of large garage doors.
Description
SHED / BARRACKS (a1) was built in 1882-83 and was intended as a shed for auxiliary barracks accommodation. The large shed, on a rectangular ground plan (approx. 47 x 11 m), is executed in a chalet-like style with half-timbering, infilled with brick. The single-storey building has a gabled roof of moderate pitch covered with pantiles. The end gables possess an overhang with wooden blocks and corbels. To the left of and in front of the gable on the Kapelweg side is a single-storey boiler house situated with tall chimney. Both this front gable and the side gables are characterised by the rhythm of paired windows and half-timbering. In the front gable and in both side gables wooden four-pane and six-pane windows respectively with fanlights. In the front gable the date 1883 is inscribed, with above it a window in the top gable.
The interior consists of a simple wooden roof truss structure with a (mezzanine) floor within it. The roof truss structure is visible in the rhythm of the external gable with thicker wooden components. The building is rare in form and function within the New Holland Waterline.
Valuation
SHED / BARRACKS (a1) of Fort Blauwkapel is of general importance by virtue of:
* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden structures related to military-strategic building, which are based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century).
This concerns a component from the period 1871-1886, namely a shed / barracks with the purpose of auxiliary accommodation for military personnel, from 1882/83.
* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Holland Waterline. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative because it is an example of an authentic (temporary) accommodation for troops installed on a defensive work and it represents rarity values because of its form (chalet-like with half-timbering) and its function (auxiliary barracks accommodation).
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and building detailing, as well as various components have remained intact.
