NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 30. Remains of inundation sluice / dam-sluice / bridge (in Kerkeindsche Dijk).
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
REMAINS OF INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM-SLUICE / BRIDGE (in Kerkeindsche Dijk) as a military and civil hydraulic engineering component of the New Hollandic Waterline. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs, drainage channels and canals, by means of which the water level could be rapidly set and maintained within narrow limits. The drainage channels and canals were often already present at the location and required at most some adjustment. At Fort De Gagel, various waterworks were constructed which served to precisely regulate the desired levels of the inundation fields and the fort moat. These included dam-sluices constructed in different phases and a sluice. Two dam-sluices formed part of connections between an inundation basin constructed around 1880 and respectively the Kerkeindsche Drainage Channel and the fort moat. A third was a dam-sluice which served to block off the Kerkeindsche Drainage Channel. The remains of the sluice and bridge are located to the north of the fort in Kerkeindsche Dijk (now: Burg. Huydecoperweg) and connected the Kerkeindsche Drainage Channel with the inundation basin. The work had both a civil and a military function, as it formed part of the boundary between two polders (Polder Binnenweg and Polder Gagel) and - because it formed part of the inundation basin embankment Kerkeindsche Dijk - also between two inundation basins. After military inundations reached a sufficient level, the dam-sluice was closed with two rows of sluice gates and a clay layer. Inundation basins served to allow churning water at inlets to settle somewhat in order to reduce or prevent damage from erosion to dykes and waterworks. The original bridge with gate (the bridge lay to the west next to the gate) can no longer be seen as it has been replaced by a solid road surface, but the abutments can still be recognized in the verges. More remains and traces may be present.
Description
REMAINS OF INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM-SLUICE / BRIDGE (in Kerkeindsche Dijk) consisting of masonry abutments with right-angled and oblique wing walls which traditionally supported a bridge deck and to the east of which were provided with sluice gate slots for use as an inundation sluice and dam-sluice. Recognizable remains and traces of these are still present in the road verges. The work dates from the time of the modernization of the fort and the construction of the inundation basin, around 1880.
Valuation
The REMAINS OF INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM-SLUICE / BRIDGE (in Kerkeindsche Dijk) near Fort De Gagel is of general significance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which was based on and emerged as a consequence of - the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) and - the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).
This is a component that originally dates from around 1880, namely an expression of historical road and hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic architecture, consisting of abutments of a bridge with annexed water inlet and gate.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline, and because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* Archaeological values because of possibly present remains or traces of waterworks in the soil.
