Omschrijving
Cluster 30. Fortwachterswoning.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
In topgevels noordoost kleinere vensters.
Waardering

Description
Cluster 30. Fort Guard's Dwelling.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
FORT GUARD'S DWELLING as a component of Fort De Gagel built outside the fort island but within the fort moat. The dwelling is located on the landhoofd at the Klopdijk side at the Gageldijk. A dwelling appears at this location on a drawing of the fort from 1880; it is presumed to be this example, but there is also information dating the building to 1904. Because most forts and other defence works (located outside built-up areas) - when there was no question of mobilisation or exercises - had no garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other form of shelter for a manager or guard. Sometimes such a dwelling or shelter also had another function, such as that of a sluice-keeper's dwelling or bridge-keeper's house. In the applied architecture there is therefore no uniformity; also the building material used varies, but usually consists of brick or wood, while the number of storeys also differs. Furthermore, with regard to the location of a guard's dwelling there is no clear standard; some are located within the fort moat, others outside it - sometimes even at some distance from the fort, but usually they are situated on the gorge side of the respective fort. The fort guard's dwelling at Fort De Gagel is a brick structure under a gabled roof, comprising one storey. In the south-eastern roof plane a velux window and a flue gas outlet have been installed relatively recently. Shutters executed with (not original) red and white hourglass motif. Both gable ends provided with plaster layer and rectangular windows and smaller examples in both gable tops, possibly installed later.
Description
FORT GUARD'S DWELLING at the Gageldijk / Klopdijk led around the fort and situated on the landhoofd, next to the entrance to Fort De Gagel. The dwelling is built on a rectangular floor plan (approx. 10 x 7 m) and is covered by a gabled roof tiled with pantiles, in which in the north-western roof plane, relatively high, is a brick flue. The dwelling has one storey and is provided at the rear with a (later) extension. The dwelling, built entirely in brick, has white-painted plasterwork on the gable ends. The south-eastern long facade (main facade) has a central, arched entrance opening containing a mid-20th-century door and shared fanlight, and to the left and right an arched, wooden sash window (newly filled in; also some wall anchors. In the north-eastern gable end ditto window openings; all these windows provided with shutters. In gable tops north-east smaller windows.
Valuation
FORT GUARD'S DWELLING of Fort De Gagel is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic building practice, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and gorge defence (19th or early 20th century).
This concerns a component which is presumed to date from around 1880 - but possibly from 1904 - namely a military service dwelling located outside the fort but within the fort moat, on the landhoofd.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and because of the special location on the gorge side of the fort on the landhoofd.
* The component is representative because it is an example of a military service dwelling arranged at a defence work.
* The component is fairly well preserved because the main form and constructional detailing, as well as various components have remained intact.
