Cluster 30. Bomvrije kazerne.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 30. Bombproof barracks.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
BOMBPROOF BARRACKS, built as a component added around 1880 during modernisation of Fort De Gagel. A barracks is a residential building for soldiers and their equipment. It was the French who introduced, at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, the system of quartering soldiers in barracks. Since that time, barracks became part of forts, but alongside this many were also established as separate structures within or outside built-up areas (towns). The barracks buildings situated within 19th-century forts and other works were usually constructed as bombproof shelters, that is to say they were intended to be capable of withstanding (contemporary) enemy fire. Masonry metres thick and later (reinforced) concrete were initially used as building materials, while the roof and front face(s) were additionally provided with earth covering. The barracks not situated within forts or other works were buildings specially erected and fitted for that purpose or otherwise, with accommodation for (permanent) quartering of military personnel. Often they were provided with other military facilities, such as parade grounds. The barracks building of Fort De Gagel is located on the gorge side to the left of the central axis of the fort and belongs to the earth-covered bombproof buildings. The building is executed in two storeys in masonry and was in practice, in terms of accommodation and storage, the successor to the 30-years-older bombproof square guardhouse. A restoration is planned for the barracks and there are plans for new use.
Description
Medium-sized BOMBPROOF BARRACKS on a rectangular ground plan (approximately 60 x 10 m), located to the left (= north) of the centre on the fort and built in 1879-1880. The barracks is of a type of buildings constructed in brick and which are earthed on three sides and on top. On top also a number of masonry air and/or smoke channels. Only the gorge side (south-west) has a visible facade. The barracks is executed in two storeys while the visible facade is six bays long. On the ground floor six arched entrances flanked by window openings and on the upper floor three coupled, comparable window openings - all provided with shutters. On either side of the facade descending retaining walls, on the left a large facade opening with double doors flanked by small openings giving access to storage rooms and on the right a few smaller facade openings.
Valuation
BOMBPROOF BARRACKS of Fort De Gagel is of general interest on account of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the competition with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).
This concerns a component from approximately 1880 - as an example of a medium-sized bombproof barracks.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also on account of the functional and physical cohesion with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because in its appearance it displays the characteristics that underline the defensive purpose of that time.
* The component is well preserved because the building is in a condition in which the original material and functional condition are still well reflected.
