NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

BRIDGE AND CHECK SLUICE (east) as a combined military and civil hydraulic engineering component of the defence and inundation means for the polder area around Vuren. The defence system of the New Hollandic Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were used, depending on the place where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing shipping, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. Both occurred at the Fort at Vuren.

This concerns a check sluice to the east of the fort, which served to close off the drainage of a no longer existing steam pumping station for the polders around Vuren. The check sluice also served to maintain the water level in the fort ditch. Over the drainage of the pumping station a bridge as part of the maintenance path of the fort ditch; the bridge was also used for operating the closure of the check sluice. Parallel to the pumping station lay a partially still existing culvert / dam sluice / inundation sluice. The works lie next to each other, somewhat to the north of the sharp bend in the Waaldijk to the east of the fort. Bridge and check sluice are the remaining components of a vanished steam pumping station and with it they are the only visible relics of a 19th-century water work that also arose in response to water management changes in this area through the construction of the Fort at Vuren.

Description

BRIDGE AND CHECK SLUICE (east) to the west of a no longer existing steam pumping station and together forming part of the provisions for closing off the fort ditch and the drainage of the pumping station, dating from 1924. The BRIDGE, executed partly in iron, functioned as an operating bridge for the closure of the drainage and is for this purpose also provided with an iron railing and other auxiliary structures. The CHECK SLUICE consists of two relatively high, concrete heads with diagonal wing walls and adjoining (concrete) parts and is provided with multiple shutter-bar grooves and a barrier. Typologically it concerns a check sluice in an execution that is rare within the New Hollandic Water Line. The relic is a relatively rare example of an independent hydraulic engineering provision / structure that was spared after the demolition of the pumping station to which it belonged.

Valuation

BRIDGE AND CHECK SLUICE (east) at the Fort at Vuren are of general importance by virtue of:

* Cultural-historical values as components of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and thereafter strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic building techniques, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic building techniques, namely a water work which in combination with several nearby, related works could contribute to the inundation of polder areas and the maintenance of the water level in the ditch of the Fort at Vuren.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is fairly well preserved because the main form, constructional detailing and various components have remained recognisable and it represents rarity value as a relic of a pumping station and from a typological perspective.
