NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

LOCK (Nieuwendijk south) (Veldsluis), as a hydraulic engineering component of the New Hollandic Waterline, with the function of inundating and damming an inundation basin on the north side of the Maasdijk. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) areas of terrain. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as locks, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were employed, depending on where they functioned in the system. Sometimes existing navigation, drainage or check locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones were (heavily) modified. The lock is situated in the Nieuwendijk, approximately 50 metres south of house number 55 and approximately 25 metres south of a second small lock in this dike. Unlike the small lock (Nieuwendijk north), lock (Nieuwendijk south) as of 2011 has not been restored and the object is in poor technical condition. The guard gate was (among other things) renewed in 1876, 1906 and 1929. Approximately 500 m to the south-west there are two further functionally related objects, namely a (culvert) lock and a culvert.

Description

A LOCK (Nieuwendijk south) (Veldsluis), constructed as a culvert, possibly laid out or modified around 1850 and consisting of a simple, approximately west to east oriented, arch-shaped closed, masonry chamber (width approximately 280 m) under the Nieuwendijk. On the west side provided with heads with two rows of gate beam slots and on the east side sloping check walls. In the conduit possibly remains or traces of a single guard gate.

Valuation

The LOCK (Nieuwendijk south) (Veldsluis) in the Nieuwendijk, approximately 50 metres south of house number 55, is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of a structure related to military-strategic architecture, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This is an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic architecture.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is preserved in reasonably intact condition because the main form and architectural detailing have remained clearly recognizable.

* The component is fairly representative (characteristic) because, in combination with three nearby and comparable elements, it provides an image of the complexity of inundation systems.
