NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

LOCK (Nieuwendijk north), long known as the Binnensluis, as a hydraulic engineering component of the New Hollandic Waterline, with the function of inundating and damming an inundation basin on the north side of the Maasdijk. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) areas of terrain. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as locks, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were employed, depending on where they functioned in the system. Sometimes existing navigation, drainage or check locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones were (heavily) modified. The lock, constructed as a culvert, is situated in the Nieuwendijk, approximately 25 metres south of house number 55, with another small lock in this dike approximately tens of metres further south. Doors (among other things) renewed at the beginning of the 20th century. The lock was comprehensively restored in 2010. Approximately 500 m to the south-west there are two further functionally related objects, namely a (culvert) lock and a culvert.

Description

A LOCK (Nieuwendijk north) (Binnensluis), constructed as a culvert, possibly laid out or modified around 1850 and consisting of a simple, approximately west to east oriented, arch-shaped closed, masonry conduit (width approximately 4 m) under the Nieuwendijk. On the west side provided with two quarter-round masonry heads, covered with natural stone slabs, with gate beam slots and iron fittings over the lock for the gate beams. In the conduit possibly pointing-gate doors facing west. On the northern head a preserved davit. On the east side a front with wing walls sloping away on either side; masonry provided with wattling.

Valuation

The LOCK (Nieuwendijk north) (Binnensluis) in the Nieuwendijk, approximately 25 metres south of house number 55, is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of a structure related to military-strategic architecture, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This is an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic architecture.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is preserved in substantially intact condition thanks to restoration, as the main form and architectural detailing have remained clearly recognizable.

* The component is fairly representative (characteristic) because, in combination with three nearby and comparable elements, it provides an image of the complexity of inundation systems.
