NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Waardering

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

WOODEN SHED as part of a small fort built around the middle of the 19th century, strengthened with earthworks, for the defence of inundation works and of the river access of the Linge. At various locations within and outside fort grounds over the course of decades wooden, stone and metal ('sheet metal') sheds have come into being to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or material, hospital, fire brigade, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has meanwhile perished, been demolished or moved, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple, small structures, but there are also more complex and larger examples. On the Fort at Asperen there is a still-existing, wooden example now in use for catering purposes.

Description

White-painted WOODEN SHED, which is situated on the south-western side directly against the tower. The shed was built around 1880 and measures approximately 25 x 8 metres. The shed is covered by a gabled roof with overhang, laid with tiled hollow pans. There are a few small roof windows and the building has green-painted wooden bargeboards (with brackets), window frames, doors, (sash) windows with glazing bars, shutters, etc. The gables are built up from half-brick sections. The western side wall is provided with six window openings, which are regularly distributed across the gable. On the opposite wall a lower annex has been added. The north gable end contains the access, which is provided with double, clamped doors. At loft level a small window. The south gable is blind.

Valuation

WOODEN SHED on the Fort at Asperen is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as this was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus was realised and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden structures related to military-strategic building construction.

This concerns a shed that dates from around 1880.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical cohesion with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a largely authentic wooden shed installed on a defensive structure.

* The component is fairly well preserved because principal form and constructional detailing, as well as many components have remained intact.
