NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

WOODEN SHED, as an example of a non-bombproof storage of material or functional space. At various locations within and outside fort grounds, over the course of decades, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been constructed to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or material, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has meanwhile deteriorated, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger specimens. In the context of restoration and conversion, the artillery shed is being relocated to the northern part of the Work at the Spoel.

Description

WOODEN SHED, after restoration painted in the original so-called Bentheim grey and dating from 1882. The shed measures approximately 13 x 9 metres and is covered by a gabled roof, laid with smoked tiles. Zinc gutters. The gables are constructed from rabat parts. Windows (east gable), in which frames with glazing bars. In the gabled south end double access doors; in both gabled ends openings at loft level. The interior was not visited.

Valuation

The WOODEN SHED, originally on the southern part of the Work at the Spoel - but meanwhile relocated to the northern part - is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden structures related to military-strategic building art, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This is a component from 1882, namely an example of a wooden storage place.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a functional, wooden storage space installed on a defensive work.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and building details as well as various components have remained intact and because restoration was part of the relocation for purposes of reuse.
