NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
SHELTERS TYPE 1918/II as components of linear and accessory defence with trench systems and the like near Fort Everdingen. (Concrete) (group) shelters formed an answer to the arrival of heavy projectiles and explosive grenades. The latter exploded when they hit their target and caused a rain of shrapnel, which could cause many casualties. They had 12 to 16 times greater explosive force than the grenades previously used and had a great destructive effect on ramparts, ground coverings and the masonry of buildings, which was also a reason to decentralise the defence. Depending on the weight of the artillery and the protection against it, since 1928 there has been a classification into resistance or protective classes, consisting of two numbers, e.g. W 12-15. The first indicates that the covering is sufficient for impacts of projectiles up to that calibre (in cm); the second that there is also protection against one or at most a few impacts up to this higher calibre. The shelters type 1918/I and type 1918/II were built according to more or less uniform or standard design in 1918 in several places in West Netherlands. Both types occur in any case within the Stelling van Amsterdam (among others at Spaarndam) and in various places in the New Hollandic Waterline (among others at Naarden, on the Houtense Vlakte and near Fort Everdingen). The total number of built examples in the New Hollandic Waterline amounts to approximately 225; the majority (approx. 165) of these still exist. Shelters Type 1918/I came about mainly at the foremost - that is usually to say eastern - of double trench systems. The Shelter Type 1918/II was mostly built along the rear or western trench. Because the trenches and other earthworks were later levelled almost everywhere, the concrete shelters nowadays almost always lie partly below ground level. The entirely closed front or front side of the shelters was usually covered by earthworks that formed part of a glacis to protect the trench or a covered way. The earthworks are mostly no longer present or only recognisable with difficulty. Bank works along the Lek have meant that some of the shelters type 1918/II in the complex Concrete Works Everdingen have come to lie on artificial islets and spits of land and have subsided, as a result of which these specimens are difficult to recognise.
Description
SHELTERS TYPE 1918/II are single-storey, usually executed in approx. 100 cm thick reinforced cast concrete, shrapnel-free, military shelters, which could provide shelter for 10 infantrymen/artillerymen, at protection class W 15-21. The shelters 1918/II were built on a rectangular ground plan, with dimensions of approximately 10.00 x 5.50 x 3.70 m, (w x d x h), of which the base is rarely visible. The visible height above ground level varies, but amounts at the highest point to 1.50 to 2.50 m. Part of the shelters is, however, much less visible. Both blank side walls are executed vertically, while the closed front side slopes slightly backwards to transition with a sharp kink to the roof surface sloping slightly backwards. This roof surface descends after a blunt angle at a slope of approximately 45° to the often not, or only partly visible, low, vertical rear wall. A variant of Type 1918/II knows here a less steep slope. In a number of cases, iron hooks were cast into the walls which could serve to fasten camouflage material. The shelters Type 1918/II were constructed as monolithic concrete works and were accessible via two access openings, on the trench side - the throat side. These eccentrically, right-positioned entrances in the wall are surrounded by a thickened concrete frame, which is more or less arranged in the same plane as the rear, sloping roof surface. Variations occur in these frames, including with thickening at the top. The low entrances themselves were mostly sealed later by means of masonry or concrete, but specimens stuffed with rubble also occur. In a few cases the shelters are still open or have been reopened. (Remains of) doors or shutters have not been found; however, there are iron hooks in the ceilings at the entrances, into which iron shutters could be hung. In a number of cases, in the years 1936-1938, an opening was made on the front, diagonally or to the side, to serve as a shooting hole for a machine gun. In this way the function changed from shelter to that of machine-gun pillbox. It is not known whether this was also the case at Fort Everdingen. The interior of the shelters 1918/II consists of a rectangular space, approximately half of which lies below ground level, which is accessible in a stooped posture via the concrete staircase of a few steps located in a corner. The ceilings, located at just over two metres above floor level, are executed rectangular and flat. A number of shelters type 1918/II within the complex Concrete Works around Fort Everdingen is clearly recognisable in the field, but others have subsided and/or lie on islets or artificial spits of land and lie partly under water as a result of bank works.
Valuation
The SHELTERS TYPE 1918/II in the vicinity of Fort Everdingen are of general interest because of:
* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as this was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and accessory defence (19th and 20th centuries), b. the race with strengthening offensive means (19th and 20th centuries), c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century).
This concerns components from the period 1914-1918. These components are examples of reinforced concrete enlisted-men's shelters.
* Ensemble value and situational values as components of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The components are representative (characteristic) because they are clearly recognisable as elements of a decentralised defence (line) added to the existing fortification system.
* The components are reasonably well preserved and, especially insofar as they do not lie in the redeveloped bank area of the Lek, can still be well recognised as built components in the field.
