NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE
Introduction
INUNDATION SLUICE WITH SHUTTER-BEAM BARRIER at Fort Everdingen as an essential component of the inundation system of the New Hollandic Water Line. The defence system of the New Hollandic Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. The inundation sluices at Fort Everdingen belong to the latter category. These comprise three examples placed in series, of which the southernmost in fact forms part of the outer bank of the wet moat and lies in the ring road (the Rondweg). The sluice was the final barrier in case of flooding of the terrain in front of it. Also important was its function as a check sluice by means of which the southern and western parts of the wet moat around the fort could be kept at the proper level. Over the sluice is a later concrete bridge with iron railings, which is of no importance for the protection. The inundation canal, laid out on the basis of a possible medieval field ditch, runs from early times from the inundation sluice / check sluice in the summer dike of the Lek southward beyond the Prijsseweg / Prijssedijk. In this lay a no-longer-existing inundation sluice / check sluice.
Description
The INUNDATION SLUICE WITH SHUTTER-BEAM BARRIER (circa 1875) in the outer bank (Rondweg) of the wet moat at the south-east corner of Fort Everdingen is a sluice built in brick and natural stone with four main heads and three openings. Between the heads, two shutter-beam slots are provided on each side, in which shutter beams are fitted. The shutter beams can be raised or lowered by means of three cast-iron windlasses (in two cases executed double). Of a fourth windlass (the most easterly) only a base remains. There are natural stone cover plates and on both sides the work connects to the dike by means of masonry wing walls. In the sluice head on the side of the inundation canal is a hardstone gauge plate.
Valuation
The INUNDATION SLUICE WITH SHUTTER-BEAM BARRIER south of Fort Everdingen is of general importance by virtue of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of a water work related to military-strategic construction, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
This is an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic construction, namely an inundation sluice / check sluice with shutter-beam barrier.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and as part of a series of three inundation sluices.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because in conjunction with two other sluices and an inundation canal it can demonstrate the principle of the operation of the inundation system.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the principal form, architectural detailing and various components, including the shutter beams and windlasses, are partly recognisable and partly present.
