NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE
Introduction
INUNDATION SLUICE WITH SHUTTER-BEAM BARRIER, WEIR AND FOOTBRIDGE at Fort Everdingen as an essential component of the inundation system of the New Hollandic Water Line. The defence system of the New Hollandic Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. The inundation sluices at Fort Everdingen belong to the latter category. These comprise three examples placed in series, of which the middle one, with weir, in fact forms part of the Southern Lek Dike. Via this sluice, water from the Lek could be admitted at high water level for the flooding of the terrain in front of it. Also important was its function as a check sluice, by means of which the southern and western parts of the wet moat around the fort were kept at the proper level. The bridge on the east side of the weir was relatively recently closed off by means of ironwork which is of no importance for the protection.
Description
The INUNDATION SLUICE WITH SHUTTER-BEAM BARRIER (circa 1875) in the Southern Lek Dike at Fort Everdingen is a brick and natural stone sluice, partly cement-rendered, with four main heads and three openings, which are closed in arches at the top. Shutter beams are fitted in the openings; the total distance between the two outer heads is approximately 10 m. Above the openings, windlasses are fitted, which are (now) rendered invisible by sheet iron. Immediately to the east of the sluice lies a so-called WEIR: a masonry water barrier forming part of the water works with a sharp ridge (donkey's back). The ridge served, in case of siege, to make it impossible or very difficult to walk across the barrier; the length of the weir is approximately 15 m. On both sides, the entire water works connect to the Lek Dike by means of sloping and slightly projecting, cement-rendered, masonry wing walls. Over the sluice and the weir is a largely profiled-iron FOOTBRIDGE, which is closed off by ornamental wrought ironwork; the bridge could be removed in case of acute emergency.
Valuation
INUNDATION SLUICE WITH SHUTTER-BEAM BARRIER, WEIR AND FOOTBRIDGE is of general importance by virtue of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of a structure related to military-strategic construction, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
This is an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic construction, namely an inundation sluice / check sluice with weir and footbridge, of around 1875, which together formed part of the southern winter dike of the Lek.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and as part of a series of three inundation sluices.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because in conjunction with two other sluices it can demonstrate the principle of the operation of the inundation system.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the principal form, architectural detailing and various components, including shutter beams, remain recognisable.
