NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
INUNDATIEKANAAL EN ONDERHOUDSWEG als functionele onderdelen van het inundatiesysteem van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Het verdedigingssysteem van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was in de eerste plaats gebaseerd op het gecontroleerd onder water zetten van (grote) terreinoppervlakken. Gecontroleerde inundatie vergde een ingenieus systeem van waterwerken, zoals sluizen, stuwen en kanalen, waarmee het noodzakelijke peil snel en binnen nauwe grenzen gesteld en gehandhaafd kon worden. Het inundatiekanaal, feitelijk een verlenging en verbreding van een bestaande wetering, liep voorheen noordwaarts vanaf de Houtense Wetering en was mede bedoeld voor het onder water zetten van de lage gronden ten zuidoosten van Utrecht in de Polder Overeind. Aan de westzijde van het kanaal een pad dat als onderhoudsweg dienst deed en eventueel voor transport van manschappen of materieel. Bij de totstandkoming / verruiming van het Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal is het zuidelijk deel van het Inundatiekanaal opgeruimd.
Omschrijving
Aansluitend op de Houtense Wetering een noordwaarts gericht INUNDATIEKANAAL, aangelegd in 1870-1871, van tegenwoordig nog ongeveer 1400 m lengte. Het kanaal, dat een verbreding en verlenging is van een bestaande waterloop is, splitst zich ter hoogte van de Batterij in een westelijke en een oostelijke tak. In het zuidelijk deel van het kanaal aan de westzijde over ongeveer een 1 km een annexe ONDERHOUDSWEG, genaamd 2e Veld.
Waardering
Het INUNDATIEKANAAL en de ONDERHOUDSWEG bij de Batterij aan de Overeindseweg Noord zijn van algemeen belang vanwege:
* Cultuurhistorische waarden als onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie zoals deze is ontworpen door C.R.T. Kraijenhoff en in eerste aanleg vanaf 1815 door hem, Jan Blanken en majoor-ingenieur Willem Offerhaus is gerealiseerd en daarna door anderen gedurende ongeveer 125 jaar is versterkt en verbeterd.
* Architectuurhistorische waarden, in het bijzonder als uiting van een aan de militair-strategische bouwkunde gerelateerde bebouwing en waterwerken, die gebaseerd zijn op het systeem van inundatie en accesverdediging (19de eeuw).
Het betreft hier aan de militair-strategische bouwkunde gerelateerde uiting van historische waterbouwkunde, namelijk een inundatiekanaal met onderhoudsweg.
* Ensemblewaarden als onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Tevens vanwege de functionele en fysieke samenhang met de overige onderdelen van het complex.

NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Introduction
INUNDATION CANAL AND MAINTENANCE PATH as functional components of the inundation system of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The defence system of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow margins. The inundation canal, in fact an extension and widening of an existing drainage ditch, previously ran northwards from the Houtense Wetering and was also intended for flooding the low-lying lands to the southeast of Utrecht in the Polder Overeind. On the west side of the canal a path that served as a maintenance path and possibly for transport of personnel or materials. Upon the creation / widening of the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal, the southern part of the Inundation Canal was cleared.
Description
Adjacent to the Houtense Wetering a northwards-directed INUNDATION CANAL, constructed in 1870-1871, of currently approximately 1400 m length. The canal, which is an extension and widening of an existing watercourse, splits at the level of the Battery into a western and an eastern branch. In the southern part of the canal on the west side over approximately 1 km an adjoining MAINTENANCE PATH, called 2e Veld.

The INUNDATION CANAL and the MAINTENANCE PATH at the Battery on the Overeindseweg Noord are of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
