Cluster 52. Remise (gebouw E).

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 52. Remise (building E).

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

REMISE (building E), as an earth-covered, bomb-proof building, which was added in a second construction phase to the battery originally laid out as a defendable earthwork on the north side of the Overeindseweg and -wetering. The remise situated on the northeast side of the battery had a similar counterpart on the southern battery. This building (building F) disappeared when this battery was cleared.

Description

Situated east of the guardhouse, REMISE (building E) erected around 1880 of tuff concrete, consisting of a facade later clad with concrete with a steel door on the west side or throat side. The other facades and the roof are earth-covered. The remise contains one room.

The REMISE is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building art, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from around the last quarter of the 19th century, namely an example of an earth-covered, bomb-proof building.

* Ensemble values and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it displays in appearance characteristics that emphasise the then defensive purpose.
