NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 52. Driftwood-Post Barrier / Lock.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
DRIFTWOOD-POST BARRIER / LOCK as a hydraulic engineering component added around 1935 to the defensive work Batteries at the Overeindseweg. The defense system of the New Hollandic Waterline was in the first place based on the controlled inundation of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as locks, weirs and canals, by which the necessary water level could be set quickly and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were employed, depending on the place where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing shipping, drainage or check locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (significantly) adapted. Sometimes local water level differences between individual polder units had to be bridged and / or created by incorporating or using check-lock gates in existing quays or dykes. For this purpose schotbalk barriers are often applied in waterways or even in coupures in quays, but also so-called bypasses with wooden or iron lifting doors or sluices with gates were used for this purpose. The schotbalk barrier lies west of the bridge over the Inundation Canal realized at the same time and forms a barrier in the Overeindse Wetering.
Description
Arund 1935 built north of the Overeindseweg in the Overeindse Wetering, a DRIFTWOOD-POST BARRIER / LOCK, consisting of two concrete abutments with sloping receding wings. In the abutments two grooves have been provided for the purposes of driftwood posts.
Valuation
The DRIFTWOOD-POST BARRIER / LOCK is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction and water works related to military-strategic building, which are based on the system of inundation and access defense (20th century).
This concerns an expression related to military-strategic building of historical hydraulic engineering, namely a lock with a driftwood-post barrier.
* Ensemble values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because as a relatively late-added hydraulic engineering component it can help demonstrate the functioning of the inundation system in the Interwar period.
* The component is well preserved because the main form and structural detailing are clearly recognizable.
