Omschrijving
Cluster 52. Wachthuis (gebouw B).
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 52. Guardhouse (building B).
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
GUARDHOUSE (building B), as an earth-covered, bombproof structure, which was added in a second building phase to the battery originally constructed as a defensible earthwork on the north side of the Overeindseweg and Overeindsewetering. The guardhouse situated on the northwest side of the work has the character of a barracks building. The building had a somewhat comparable counterpart on the southern battery. This building (building A) disappeared when the southern battery was cleared. Unlike the northern guardhouse, this had angled backward-receding retaining walls.
Description
Located on the northwest side of the earthwork, GUARDHOUSE of travertine concrete, (building B), constructed in 1876 and enlarged in 1881. The single-storey building has on the west side (throat side) a straight facade with receding wing walls at the ends. The guardhouse is earth-covered on the remaining three sides and on top. The facade is provided with a plaster layer. In the facade there are a number of steel doors. On the left, four doors close off former privies. Furthermore, the facade contains from left to right an arched double door, two window openings with shutters, three double doors, two windows with shutters and an arched double door.
Valuation
The GUARDHOUSE (building B) is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building technique, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).
This is a component from 1876 and enlarged in 1881, namely an example of a brick, earth-covered, bombproof building.
* Ensemble values and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it displays in appearance the characteristics that underline the defensive purpose of the time.
* The component is well preserved because it has undergone few essential modifications over time and has retained its original structure.
