Cluster 50. Bomvrije remise C.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Waardering

Cluster 50. Bomb-proof remise C.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

BOMB-PROOF REMISE C (1871-1873) as an added component in the third construction phase to the Fort at Jutphaas, which had previously been raised as earthwork. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts made it increasingly difficult to withstand bombardment. Reinforcement of brickwork, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other things by means of arches), shallow angles of inclination and curved or indeed pointed forms, use of concrete - and later reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy construction, were ways to keep the fortifications capable of withstanding increasing attacking force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings had proved to be an excellent means of absorbing or dampening the energy of impacts. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete works were provided with an earth layer or front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of origin - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bomb-proof buildings', when they were deemed capable of withstanding a predetermined number of impacts of heavy calibre. The remise, building C, belongs to the brick bomb-proof storage buildings built in the third quarter of the 19th century on various forts in or behind the rampart. The building has a comparable counterpart on the north-eastern bastion.

Description

BOMB-PROOF REMISE C located on the eastern flank of the earthwork of the southernmost bastion. The remise, covered with earth on three sides and on top, has a masonry western facade with on the right a bevelled corner, which is provided with wattlework and on the left a protruding forward-bent, sloping wing wall. In the middle of the facade is the arched entrance section. The remise contains one room for the placement of artillery.

Valuation

BOMB-PROOF REMISE C is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century)

This concerns a component that is an example of a brick structure from the third quarter of the 19th century, namely an earth-covered, bomb-proof storage facility.

* Ensemble value and situational values because of its location within the system of the New Hollandic Water Line in general and in particular in the direct relation to other components of the complex and the counterpart on the northern part of the fort.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is clearly recognizable as a bomb-proof storage facility.

* The component is well preserved because it still clearly exhibits the physical and functional characteristics that prompted its construction at the time.
