Omschrijving
Cluster 25. Dubbele Sluiswachterwoning.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 25. Double Lock Keeper's Dwelling.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
DOUBLE LOCK KEEPER'S DWELLING as accommodation for (the families of) two officials for the operation of the lock between the Vecht and the Merwedekanaal, which in the late 1930s was expanded to the present-day Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. The lock keeper's dwelling (Straatweg 8-10), from 1891, is constructed in neo-Renaissance style and was built on commission of Rijkswaterstaat. The layout of the interior has been partially altered. The roof truss structure is original. Behind the building is a double shed from 1891 with spout gables and a hatch in the apex gable.
Description
Situated to the east of the lock and with its roof ridge parallel to it, the DOUBLE LOCK KEEPER'S DWELLING from 1891, executed in neo-Dutch Renaissance style. The double, semi-detached dwelling is constructed in brick (in English bond with cavity, with filled sandstone frame and cutting joint) from a rectangular footprint. The detached building volume, partly with basement, consists of one storey with a gabled roof covered with smothered cross pantiles. In both roof planes there is a brick chimney. The facades are articulated by cemented and white-painted bands and corner stones. The rectangular windows and door in the first storey are executed with arched fields with polychrome decorative brickwork beneath a round-arched relieving arch with cemented blocks and voussoirs. The wooden T-sash windows of the service dwelling have natural stone lintels and wooden panel shutters. The six-bay, symmetrically arranged front facade (west side) contains two entrances with natural stone steps, glazed door with wrought-iron hinges and hardware and fanlight. On either side of each entrance is a window. The long facades are closed off by a frieze of corbelled decorative brickwork and filled-in gutter blocks with between them a polychrome series of (yellow facing bricks) cross forms with above them a moulded wooden gutter moulding. The gable ends (south and north facade) are stepped gables with stuccoed moulded coping stones. In each apex gable there is a brick, corbelled facade lintel with a segmental arched pediment as the crowning feature. On the south side a wrought-iron weathervane has been attached to it. These facades contain one window and at the top there is a rectangular window with rooster comb and a wooden casement window. On the south side this window has been replaced. Wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors have been applied. The rear facade contains in the middle two windows. On the left and right against this facade is a lean-to extension added. This has a door on the outside and a small window on the inside. The east facade of the extension is blind. The brick pattern below the gutter moulding at the rear is comparable to that of the front facade, but with the rear facade the yellow facing brick has not been used.
Valuation
The DOUBLE LOCK KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal-Vecht Lock Complex is of general interest because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years. Also as an expression of and reminder of the history of the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal (Merwedekanaal) and in particular the water connection with the Vecht.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an example of a manifestation of historical water engineering related to military-strategic building serving as a lock keeper's dwelling at the lock in neo-Dutch Renaissance style, built on commission of Rijkswaterstaat.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline and because of the functional and physical relationship with the other components of the complex. Furthermore because of the visual and functional relationship with the canal and the Vecht.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it still exhibits most of the physical components and features that originally gave reason for its construction.
* The component is well preserved because it is a well-recognisable and largely intact example of a service dwelling established at a lock.
