Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The TRAFFIC BRIDGE, designed in 1932, called the Opburenbrug, was designed by the Bridge Department of Rijkswaterstaat in the then national road A2, now Amsterdamsestraatweg, to replace a drawbridge over the lock between the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Vecht. The bridge is the first of the type 'stiffened bending arch bridge' and the oldest still existing concrete arch bridge with a low-lying carriageway. Moreover, there is a matter of a skew crossing and because of the expected pressure on the lock chamber no earth embankment could be constructed for the approach embankments.
Description
The traffic bridge, situated over the lock between the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Vecht, on the Straatweg, is constructed of reinforced concrete and steel. The bridge consists of two parabola-shaped main girders with a span of 34 metres, which are connected to one another by a grid of concrete lattice work. They slope at the springing and the bridge rests on steel pillars which are encased in concrete. To each arch are attached vertical steel H-profiles. These carry a horizontal concrete stiffening girder, which projects above the carriageway and from which horizontal transverse beams hang with between them the road deck, which is seven metres wide. Next to it is a cycle track of two metres and a pedestrian track of one metre, fenced off with a fence with round profiles, ending in scrollwork at the ends. The fence is continued along the two approach embankments, each 29 metres long. The approach embankments are independent slab constructions, supported in the longitudinal direction by two concrete walls which are provided with concrete columns on the inside.
Valuation
Traffic bridge of general importance because of the architecturally historical value as the oldest surviving example of a concrete arch bridge with a stiffening girder and low-lying carriageway, designed by the Bridge Department of Rijkswaterstaat. Of situational value in relation to the lock complex.
