Omschrijving
Cluster 22. Schotbalkenkap.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 22. Schotbalk Shed.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
SCHOTBALK SHED as a wooden structure for permanent storage of provisions for the establishment of a water barrier by means of schotbalks, in the vicinity of Bethune Polder Pumping Station. At various locations within and outside fort grounds, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been erected over the decades to serve as (temporary or permanent) storage space, depot, shelter for people or materiel, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guard house, etc. Some materials required special types of storage sheds, for example because of safety aspects or in connection with keeping things dry by means of ventilation. This was particularly the case with (wooden) sheds and storage sheds for wooden (or iron) schotbalks. A large part of the sheds has since decayed, been demolished or removed, but others still exist in situ. The schotbalk shed at the Bethune Polder Pumping Station was temporarily relocated, but after restoration was replaced.
Description
Horizontal, non-weathertight SCHOTBALK SHED near the two schotbalk barriers / check sluices at the Bethune Polder Pumping Station. The structure is situated on the south side of the Machinevaart, somewhat to the southwest of the outlet of the Bethune Polder Pumping Station.
Valuation
SCHOTBALK SHED is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden structures related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),
This concerns a wooden schotbalk storage shed belonging to nearby schotbalk barriers / check sluices.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative because it is an example of a wooden storage shed equipped for a special function and represents rarity value from this point of view.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and constructional detailing as well as various components have remained intact, but in part has also been restored with modern materials.
