NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 20. Dam lock/Culvert.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
DAM LOCK / CULVERT as an essential military and civil water management component of water control around the Fort at Tienhoven. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as locks, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. The fort ditches and inundation canals were also often equipped with locks to set or maintain the desired level. Many different types of locks were used, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones were (considerably) adapted. Sometimes local level differences between individual polder units had to be bridged by inserting or using check gates in existing quays or dykes. For this purpose, schotbalk gates in waterways or even in cuts in quays were often used, but also so-called sluices with wooden or iron lift gates or culverts with sluice gates were employed for this purpose. The dam lock on the south-east side of the Fort at Tienhoven formed a closable connection between the fort ditch and the so-called Water Supply Canal. The Water Supply Canal was constructed shortly before the Second World War as part of the water supply to Amsterdam and required adjustments to the inundation provisions of the New Hollandic Waterline, including this closable culvert, by means of which the fort's ditch could be separated from the inundation canal. In the vicinity of the fort and in connection with it are several other (check) locks with a function within the New Hollandic Waterline.
Description
DAM LOCK / CULVERT of approximately 10.00 m length, consisting of two parallel, low pipes - together approximately 6.00 metres wide - built in 1940 and located beneath the Nieuweweg conducted on the south side around the Fort at Tienhoven. The lock comprises on either side, approximately perpendicular to the road, concrete heads / retaining walls and a central head and is provided on either side with recesses for the lowering of schotbalks. The heads and retaining walls are connected by low concrete walls, on which low iron balustrades.
The DAM LOCK / CULVERT is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realized by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years was reinforced and improved.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of buildings and waterworks related to military-strategic engineering, which are based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
This concerns an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic engineering, namely a dam lock with schotbalk gate which because of changes in the water regime had to be added to the existing system.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical connection with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because in connection with several nearby locks it can demonstrate the principle of operation of the inundation system.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and architectural detailing are clearly recognizable.
