NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE Introduction

BRIDGE WITH INUNDATION PROVISION / SCHOTBALK BARRIER (at Hilversumsch Canal), as a civil and military water engineering component of the New Hollandic Waterline, slightly east of the gentle bend in the Provincial Road Hilversum-Haarlem (Vreelandseweg) and south-east of Fort Kijkuit. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was based first and foremost on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as locks, weirs and canals, with which the necessary water level could be rapidly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were employed, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones were substantially adapted. Sometimes local water level differences between individual polder units had to be bridged by incorporating or using check locks in existing embankments or dykes. For this purpose schotbalk barriers were often applied in waterways or even in cuts in embankments, but also so-called spillways with wooden or iron lift gates or sluices with slides were used for this purpose. A number of locks and water barriers lay in a continuous dyke or road and were or were provided with a fixed or moveable bridge. Where no special navigation interests were at stake, usually a fixed bridge was laid. The latter was the case with the two comparable bridges with inundation provision in the Provincial Road Hilversum-Haarlem east of Vreeland from the 1930s. Slightly east of the bridge with inundation provision / schotbalk barrier, traces and remains are present of a former anti-tank obstacle.

Description

BRIDGE WITH INUNDATION PROVISION / SCHOTBALK BARRIER (at Hilversumsch Canal), executed as a simple concrete slab bridge, which is approximately 12 m wide and has a navigation width of approximately 7 m. The bridge in question, built in the 1930s, is a traffic bridge with two carriageways and on the south side a bicycle path. Round iron railings on straight posts in white and blue. On the north side in the bridge abutments double schotbalk sill mortises executed with iron profiles set in natural stone blocks. On either side in front of the bridge in the water four hexagonal bollards and dolphins.

Valuation

BRIDGE WITH INUNDATION PROVISION / SCHOTBALK BARRIER (at Hilversumsch Canal) is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as this was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus was realised and thereafter by others over approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which was based on and emerged as a consequence of the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries).

This concerns a component from the 1930s, namely an expression related to military-strategic architecture of historical water engineering in the form of a bridge with inundation provision and water barrier.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with Fort Kijkuit situated slightly to the north-west.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of the application of a fixed bridge with inundation provision and water barrier.

* The component is well preserved because it has remained intact in complete form.
