Omschrijving
Cluster 13. Bomvrij Wachthuis met Remises.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
Bovenop enkele gemetselde rook- of luchtkanalen.

Description
Cluster 13. Bombproof Guardhouse with Coach Houses.
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE WITH COACH HOUSES (building A) as a defensive work provided on three sides and on top with an earth covering. A guardhouse is a shelter with provisions for personnel and their equipment; a coach house is a storage place for cannons with associated ammunition. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisant) grenades it became increasingly difficult to resist attacks. Reinforcement of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other things by means of arches), shallow angles of inclination and curved or pointed forms, use of concrete - and later reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to make the fortifications resistant to increasing attack force. Furthermore, the application of earth coverings had proved to be a good means of absorbing or dampening energy. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete works were provided with an earth layer or front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of origin - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - the term 'bombproof buildings' was used, when they were deemed capable of withstanding a predefined number of impacts from heavy calibre.
Description
BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE WITH COACH HOUSES, originally from the period 1844-1847 and then built as a defensible, virtually square, but in appearance not symmetrical, brick structure with on the gorge side (northwest) left and right some metres forward-lying sections. On top the guardhouse was provided with an artillery position covered by masonry with gun emrasures. Around it lay a moat. In 1880 the artillery position was removed, the moat was filled in and the building was earthed over. At the same time it was enlarged on both sides with a slightly set-back remise provided with a sloping roof. Guardhouse and coach houses as an ensemble did not come about from a standard formula. The brick facade is provided with a still present plaster layer, on which a camouflage painting from 1937 is present. Along the three other sides and on top the guardhouse and coach houses are brought under an earth covering. On top some masonry smoke or air channels. The structure has multiple mutually different - whether or not bricked-up - arched entrances and window openings, in which wooden doors and frames. In the facade the inscription "Kijkuit". The interior is formed by a number of mutually connected, arched spaces.
Valuation
The BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE WITH COACH HOUSES of Fort Kijkuit is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on:
a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),
b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).
This concerns here a component from approximately 1844-1847, enlarged in 1880, as an example of a brick, bombproof building that came about in a not widely applied form.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) and relatively rare because it in appearance shows the characteristics that emphasize the defensive purpose of the time and demonstrates the physical development from defensible guardhouse to guardhouse with coach houses.
* The component is well preserved because the structure in main form and detailing still shows its functions and its particular development.
