The register's description

Cluster 13. Fortwachterswoning.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

In zuidwestelijk dakvlak twee relatief recente dakkapellen; in noordoostelijk dakvlak relatief recent tuimelraam.

Omschrijving

Cluster 13. Fort keeper's dwelling.

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING as an accommodation situated outside the actual fort for the manager of the fort site. Because most forts and other defensive works (situated outside built-up areas) - when there was no mobilisation or exercises - had no garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other type of accommodation for a manager or keeper. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also had another function, such as that of a sluice or bridge keeper's dwelling. With regard to the location of a keeper's dwelling, there are no clear standards; the building materials used vary, but are usually brick or wood. The fort keeper's dwelling at Fort Kijkuit is situated west of the fort, along the Gabriëlweg, with the roof ridge approximately south-east-north-west. On the side gable on the north-east side a small, relatively recent, wooden extension under a flat roof. In the south-west roof slope two relatively recent roof dormers; in the north-east roof slope a relatively recent tilting window.

Description

One-storey FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING dating from 1880 in brick, on a floorplan of approximately 11 x 8.50 metres and covered by a gabled roof with muted tuile-du-nord tiles, with eaves and wind bracing and with the ridge running south-east to north-west. Rendered chimney shafts built in at both ends of the roof ridge. The facades are provided with rectangular window openings under a rooster comb, containing predominantly non-original windows and doors. On the north-west gable end a wooden extension under a lean-to roof.

Valuation

The FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of Fort Kijkuit is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and first realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic building science, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),

b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from the period 1871-1886, namely a one-storey dwelling from 1880.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and because of the characteristic location on the gorge side of the fort.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a keeper's dwelling arranged at a defensive work.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and structural detailing have remained fairly intact.
