The register's description

Cluster 13. Houten loods.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

HOUTEN LOODS

Cluster 13. Wooden shed.

NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Introduction

WOODEN SHED as the southern example of two wooden sheds outside the moat on the northwest or throat side of Fort Kijkuit. At various locations both within and outside fort grounds over the course of decades wooden, stone and metal ('tinplate') sheds were constructed to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, store, accommodation for people or material, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has meanwhile perished, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. The shed at Fort Kijkuit is relatively intact.

WOODEN SHED

Green-painted WOODEN SHED, which was built around 1880. The shed lies outside the fort moat, somewhat to the north of the access road to the fort near and with its greatest length perpendicular to the access bridge. The shed measures approximately 10 x 8 metres and is covered by a gabled roof covered with dampened tiles, with the ridge running from southwest to northeast. On the southwest side there is a small, also gabled, outbuilding. The facades are executed in timber boarding and provided with rectangular facade openings, in which white, mostly non-original windows and doors.

The WOODEN SHED at Fort Kijkuit is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others strengthened and improved for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden construction related to military-strategic architecture, which is connected to:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),

b. the arms race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from the period 1871-1886, namely a wooden store building from around 1880.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is a good example of a shed installed at a defensive work.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and architectural detailing have remained fairly intact.
